Recent developments in the U.S. are showing that hemp is not only eco-friendly but also compatible with modern textile production, making it a promising option for brands and consumers alike.

What Makes Hemp a Sustainable Fiber

Hemp is a fast-growing, low-water crop that can improve soil health. Its deep taproots naturally aerate and cleanse the soil, making it ideal as a rotational crop alongside cotton, corn, wheat, and soy. This regenerative quality helps farmers restore depleted farmland and prepare it for future harvests.

Because hemp requires minimal pesticides and can yield fiber in just 120–150 days, it represents a highly efficient, eco-conscious crop for apparel brands seeking alternatives to conventional cotton.

Making Hemp Wearable: Cottonization

A common misconception about hemp is that it’s rough or itchy. Modern processing techniques, however, can make hemp soft and suitable for textiles. The mechanical cottonization process shortens and softens hemp fibers, making them compatible with cotton and other short-staple fibers like Tencel.

This means brands can create blended fabrics—typically 20–30% hemp with cotton—without sacrificing comfort or performance. The fiber can be spun in ring or open-end processes, allowing it to be used in denim, knitwear, and other apparel categories.

Hemp in the Market

While hemp fiber is currently more expensive than cotton, interest is growing among brands looking for traceable, sustainable fibers. Early adopters include Wrangler and Lee, Patagonia, and select fashion innovators exploring blends that balance sustainability with price.

U.S.-grown hemp is also positioning itself for global markets. Mills in Asia—including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia—are testing American industrial hemp for denim and textiles, which could reshape sourcing strategies and bring fiber production closer to home for Western brands.
